About Hazardous & Specialist Waste Disposal
Some materials legally cannot go in a standard skip or a general man-and-van load, and getting this wrong carries real safety and legal consequences, not just an inconvenience. Asbestos — still found in older properties in textured coatings, garage roofs and some floor tiles — must be removed by a licensed asbestos contractor, since disturbing it yourself releases fibres that pose a serious long-term health risk. Electrical items (TVs, computers, batteries and other WEEE) must go through an authorised WEEE recycling facility rather than landfill, under the WEEE Regulations 2013. Fridges and freezers specifically need their refrigerant gas safely recovered by an F-Gas certified engineer before disposal — it’s illegal to simply scrap or crush one with refrigerant still inside. Chemicals, paints, solvents and oils are classed as hazardous waste and need a specialist hazardous waste carrier, separate from general skip hire.
