Quick answer: Phoenix collects bulk trash by appointment: up to 4 free appointments a year, each up to 10 cubic yards. City customers can also take one load of up to a ton a month to a city transfer station free. The city rents residential roll-off bins too, at $165 per pull plus $55 a ton in 2026, and picks up up to 5 appliances for $30.
How waste removal works in Phoenix
Phoenix Public Works collects trash from homes that pay the city’s monthly solid waste fee. Since 1 October 2024 bulk trash has been collected by appointment. Neighbouring cities such as Tempe, Scottsdale, Glendale and Mesa run their own services, so check which city bills you for trash.
Bulk trash appointments
From the City of Phoenix announcement of the new programme and its bulk trash pages, read September 2026.
| Rule | What the city says |
|---|---|
| How many | Up to 4 appointments per calendar year (from 2025) |
| Size limit | 10 cubic yards per appointment, roughly 17 ft by 4 ft by 4 ft |
| Booking | Online or by phone on 602-262-6251, at least 3 business days ahead |
| Set-out | No earlier than 7 days before, and ready by 5:30 am on the day; collection starts at 6 am |
| Blackout dates | No appointments on 31 October or the 7 days after, with similar pauses around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year |
| Over the limit | Book another appointment, or use the free monthly transfer station allowance |
City fees for extra services (2026 rate schedule)
| Service | Fee |
|---|---|
| Appliance pickup, up to 5 | $30 |
| Appliance with refrigerant, picked up | $25 each |
| Appliance with refrigerant, dropped at a transfer station | $20 each |
| Residential roll-off bin, per pull | $165 plus tonnage |
| Tonnage (trash, or contaminated recycling or green waste) | $55 a ton |
| Clean green organics | $32 a ton at 27th Avenue; $37 at North Gateway |
| Roll-off not serviced within 10 days | Additional $165 |
A city roll-off is worth pricing against a private dumpster, because the city charges by weight: a light load of furniture may come out cheaper than a flat weekly rate, while heavy debris may not.
Free transfer station loads
A resident paying full monthly trash fees can take one load of up to one ton (2,000 lb) each calendar month to a city transfer station at no charge, with a current city services bill that shows the account is paid up and photo ID that matches it. The city’s 27th Avenue Transfer Station is at 3060 S 27th Ave.
Dumpsters on the street
Temporary use of streets and sidewalks is handled by the Street Transportation Department’s Right-of-Way Management Office. Its page, read in September 2026, does not list a dumpster permit or fee, so ask the office (602-262-6235) or your dumpster company before a bin goes on the street. A dumpster on your own driveway avoids the question, though your HOA may have its own rules. For paint, batteries and chemicals, see household hazardous waste in the US.
Typical private prices in Phoenix
For typical private prices, use the national ranges in our US waste removal costs guide. HomeGuide’s junk removal guide puts a minimum load at $70 to $100, a half truck at $200 to $300 and a full truck at $400 to $450, and Fixr’s dumpster guide gives $250 to $400 a week for a 10-yard dumpster and $275 to $450 for a 20-yard one, with $40 to $100 a ton if you go over the weight allowance. We did not find a sourced, checkable Phoenix figure, so we have not added a local adjustment. The city’s own roll-off and transfer station rates give you a benchmark.

How to choose a provider in Phoenix
Phoenix does not publish a hauler register that householders can search, so rely on a written quote and a receipt, and compare against the city’s own roll-off rates. Before you book anyone:
- Ask for the price in writing and what it includes: labour, the number of hours or the share of a truck, dump fees, and extra charges for mattresses, fridges, tyres or electronics.
- For a dumpster, ask about the weight allowance, the charge per ton over it, how many days are included, and what cannot go in (paint, batteries, tyres and appliances are common exclusions).
- If it will sit on the street, ask the company to confirm it will get the city permit and whether the fee is in the price.
- Ask where the waste goes and get a receipt that names the company.
- Check the city service first. For a few bulky items, the city pickup described above may cost nothing.
Our checklist on comparing waste removal quotes works just as well for US quotes.
