Quick answer: Dublin City Council collects bulky household items for €50 for up to five items, booked through its Citizen Hub. You can take bulky waste yourself to the Council’s recycling centres at Ringsend, North Strand or Ballymun, where a car load of chargeable waste costs €21 at Ringsend. A skip on a street with parking restrictions needs a Council permit at €27 a day per 5 metres, applied for 7 working days ahead, and the on-the-spot litter fine rose to €250 on 1 September 2026. Any collector you pay must hold an NWCPO waste collection permit.
How waste removal works in Dublin
Dublin is split between four councils: Dublin City Council, Fingal, South Dublin and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. This guide uses Dublin City Council’s published fees; if you live in one of the county areas, check your own council’s rules, because they run their own skip and recycling centre systems. Household bins in Ireland are collected by private, permitted companies rather than by the council; our guide to household bins in the Republic of Ireland explains how that works. For anything that will not fit in the bins you have four routes: the Council’s bulky collection, a recycling centre, a skip, or a permitted rubbish removal firm.
Bulky household waste collection
We read Dublin City Council’s bulky household waste collection terms in September 2026. The key rules:
| Rule | What the Council says |
|---|---|
| Cost | €50 per collection for up to five items; another €50 for each further five items. A three-piece suite counts as three items. No reductions for fewer items |
| Booking | Online through the Council’s Citizen Hub, or by phone on 01 222 2222. Pay in advance by card |
| Timing | The Council normally phones within 5 working days to set a date; collection may take up to 10 days after payment, Monday to Friday, 8am to 3pm. You cannot choose the date |
| Accepted | Furniture, beds and mattresses, carpets, kitchen units and worktops, doors, bathroom suites, bicycles, ladders, garden furniture, drained oil tanks, boilers and radiators, prams and large toys |
| Not accepted | Bagged household waste, garden waste, rubble, soil, plasterboard or asbestos, large amounts of renovation waste, glass, gas cylinders, paints and other hazardous waste, electrical goods |
| Presentation | On the public footpath outside the property on the morning of collection; refused items must be taken back in or you risk a litter fine |
| Who can use it | Households in the Dublin City Council area only; not commercial premises |
Before you pay to dispose of a mattress, see our guide to mattress disposal.
Recycling centre charges
Dublin City Council runs recycling centres at Ringsend (Pigeon House Road), North Strand (Shamrock Terrace) and Ballymun, for household waste only. Packaging recycling, fridges, electricals, batteries and textiles are free. For bulky items, mattresses (up to two per load), timber, DIY rubble, garden waste and household hazardous waste, you pay by vehicle. These are the charges on the Council’s Ringsend leaflet (new prices, February 2026):
| Vehicle or item | Charge |
|---|---|
| Car | €21 |
| Estate car, jeep or SUV | €28 |
| Car and single-axle trailer | €55 |
| Van, or vehicle with double-axle trailer | €95 |
| Green waste | €2 an 80-litre bag; €16 a 1m³ skip bag |
| Household general waste | €4 an 80-litre bag |
Commercial waste and full large or commercial vans are refused, and so are tyres, oil tanks, petrol and diesel, and asbestos. For asbestos, read our guide to suspected asbestos before anyone disturbs it.
Skips on the road: Dublin City permits
A skip wholly on your own drive needs no permit. On a Dublin City road with no parking restrictions you also do not need one, provided the skip is placed safely and at least 3 metres of road width is kept clear for traffic. Where there are restrictions, such as yellow lines, clearways or pay-and-display, you need a Council permit, and the application must reach the Council 7 working days (excluding weekends and bank holidays) before delivery.
| Where the skip goes | 2026 Council charge |
|---|---|
| Road or footpath with restrictions | €27 a day (or part) per 5 metres |
| Pay-and-display bay, very high demand zone | €50 per 24 hours |
| High demand zone | €41 per 24 hours |
| Medium demand zone | €27 per 24 hours |
| Low demand zone | €19 per 24 hours |
| Suburban villages | €12.70 per 24 hours |
| Roll-on roll-off skip | Two bays, so twice the fee |
There is no charge on Sundays in loading bays or where parking is free that day. Kollect’s Dublin guide summarises the Council’s Control of Skips Bye-Laws 2025: full skips must go within 24 hours, skips must carry the operator’s name and licence number, and skip bags are not allowed on Dublin City roads or footpaths, so a bag has to sit on your own property. Our guide to hiring a skip covers sizes and loading.
Illegal dumping fines
Since 1 September 2026 the on-the-spot fine for littering in Ireland has been €250, up from €150, according to Citizens Information and the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment. On conviction in the District Court a litter offence can bring a fine of up to €3,000, and Citizens Information notes fines of up to €130,000 in the Circuit Court for causing environmental pollution. Just as important for anyone paying to get rid of rubbish: if a council can find out who owns material that has been dumped, the owner can be prosecuted even if they were not caught dumping it. That is why the permit check below matters. Report dumping to the council or to the 24-hour National Environmental Complaints Line on 1800 365 123.
Typical private prices in Dublin
For typical private prices, use the national ranges in our Ireland waste removal costs guide. In summary, Kollect’s published Dublin rates (September 2026) run from €194.11 for a 2.5-yard skip to €529.44 for a 14-yard skip, including VAT, delivery, collection and disposal, and Cork Mini Skips’ published zone prices run from €230 for a 3-yard skip to €610 for a 14-yard skip. M50 Skip Hire in Santry advertises a 2.5-yard mini skip at €185. Kollect adds €40 for each mattress, because mattresses cannot go in the skip with other waste, and its junk removal starts from €82.Weight matters as much as size: the State landfill levy is €85 a tonne, which feeds into disposal charges, so soil, rubble and tiles cost more to get rid of than the same volume of light household junk; see soil and rubble removal.

How to choose a provider in Dublin
Anyone who collects waste for a fee in Ireland needs a waste collection permit from the National Waste Collection Permit Office (NWCPO), and the permit lists the areas and types of waste the holder may collect. Before you book:
- Ask for the NWCPO permit number and search it on the NWCPO permit register. Check the permit is current and covers Dublin and the waste you have. Our guide to checking a collector on the NWCPO permit search shows how.
- Get the price in writing, including VAT, delivery and collection, disposal by weight, and extra charges for mattresses, electricals, plasterboard or soil.
- For a skip on the road, ask whether the operator holds the council skip licence and whether the permit fee is in the price.
- Ask where the waste goes and keep a receipt that names the company.
- Be wary of cash-only offers from a van with no permit number. Using an unpermitted collector does not end your responsibility for the waste.
Our checklist on comparing waste removal quotes works for Irish quotes too.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Dublin City Council charge to collect a sofa?
€50 per collection for up to five items, so a single sofa costs €50. A three-piece suite counts as three items. You book and pay in advance through the Citizen Hub or on 01 222 2222.
Do I need a permit for a skip in Dublin?
Not on your own drive, and not on a Dublin City road with no parking restrictions if the skip is placed safely with 3 metres of road left clear. On a restricted street you need a permit at €27 a day per 5 metres, applied for 7 working days ahead.
What is the fine for dumping rubbish in Dublin?
The on-the-spot litter fine is €250 from 1 September 2026, and a court can impose up to €3,000. The owner of dumped waste can be prosecuted if the council can trace it to them.
How do I know a rubbish collector is legal?
Ask for their NWCPO waste collection permit number and search it on the NWCPO permit register. The permit should be current and cover Dublin and the type of waste.
