Waste removal in Birmingham: bulky waste, tip bookings and skip permits

Quick answer: Birmingham City Council charges £49.50 to collect up to 10 bulky items, but in September 2026 it had paused new bulky waste bookings because of strike action. Its household recycling centres stay open with longer hours and a booking system. A skip on the road needs a council permit at £42 a week, and only a registered skip operator can apply.

Bulky waste collection in Birmingham

Birmingham runs one flat-price bulky service rather than a sliding scale. The council’s page sets out how it works:

Household recycling centres (the tip)

Birmingham’s household recycling centres (HRCs) work on bookings. The council’s booking page says:

Book at least 2 hours before you want to attend: up to 6 days ahead for cars and up to 7 days ahead for vans.
You can hold up to 2 bookings at a time, on the same day or in the same week.
Bring proof that you live in Birmingham, such as a council tax bill. Only residents can book.
Vans and trailers larger than 6 feet by 4 feet need a van slot; smaller trailers can use a car slot. No commercial vehicles are allowed.
During the industrial action all HRCs have extended hours: 7am to 9pm on weekdays and 8am to 6pm at weekends. Car users do not need to book at Castle Bromwich while its car booking is switched off, and Kings Norton is being redeveloped, so fewer slots may be available there.

Fly-tipping fines

With bulky collections paused, the risk of rubbish going to the wrong person is higher. In England, councils can issue a fixed penalty of up to £1,000 for fly-tipping and up to £600 to a householder who fails in their duty of care, for example by paying an unregistered collector whose load is later dumped (GOV.UK). How to choose a waste carrier

Anyone you pay to take your rubbish away must be registered to carry waste. In England that is the Environment Agency register, which GOV.UK lets you search by name, postcode or registration number. If your waste is later fly-tipped by someone you did not check, you can be fined too. Before you book:

Check the register yourself. Ask for the registration number and look it up, rather than relying on a logo on a van or website.
Ask where the waste goes. A proper firm will name the transfer station or recycling site it uses.
Get a waste transfer note or receipt that describes the waste and names the carrier.
Ask what the price covers: labour, loading time, weight or volume limits, and extra charges for fridges, mattresses, sofas or plasterboard.
