Unwanted items collections in Leeds

Leeds counts items strictly: furniture must be dismantled, and each part counts as one item, so a bed can be four items (frame, slats, mattress and headboard). It will not take items larger than 6 feet by 4 feet, bathroom suites, kitchen units, boilers and radiators, rubble, tyres, gas bottles, paint and chemicals, mirrors and glass, pianos, hot tubs or windows. Recycling centres, DIY waste and permits

Small amounts of DIY waste are free at Leeds household waste recycling centres, following the government change that took effect on 8 January 2024. The free limit is 4 visits a month per household, each with either two 50-litre bags or one large item up to 2m by 0.75m. Rubble, soil, plasterboard, ceramic bathroom items and up to 4 car or motorcycle tyres fall under this limit. Asbestos can only go to Kirkstall waste transfer station, booked 48 hours ahead. Anything over the limit needs a skip, a licensed carrier or a paid visit to the Kirkstall or Seacroft waste transfer stations.

You need a permit to bring a van, pick-up, 8 to 16 seat vehicle, a car with business logos or a car with a trailer. Eligible residents get 12 permits a year (at most 4 for borrowed or company vehicles), and up to 4 temporary 14-day permits for hired vans. Vans over 3 tonnes and trailers larger than 1.2m by 1.8m are not allowed. Landlords cannot use the centres for waste from rented homes, as that is business waste. Leeds Accredited Waste Carrier Scheme

Leeds is unusual in running its own scheme for private collectors. Members of the Leeds Accredited Waste Carrier Scheme (LAWCS) are accredited by the council and sign up to a code of practice, and the council lists them on the Leeds Directory. Using one can help you meet your duty of care, but still check the national waste carrier register as well.

Skip permits in Leeds

A skip on a road or pavement in Leeds needs a highways licence, and applications must come from a registered skip company, not the householder. Applications received before 9am on a weekday are reviewed that day; later ones the next working day. Once a licence has been issued the fee stands, even if you cancel or change the dates. The council’s licences page does not publish the skip fee itself, so ask your skip firm what it is charging for the licence. See skip permits and the public highway.

Checkatrade’s June 2026 skip guide puts a 2 to 3 yard mini skip at £75 to £175 a week, a 4 to 5 yard midi at £130 to £320 and a 6 to 8 yard builder’s skip at £190 to £450, and its rubbish removal guide gives £64 to £94 an hour for a man and van. How to choose a waste carrier

Anyone you pay to take your rubbish away must be registered to carry waste. In England that is the Environment Agency register, which GOV.UK lets you search by name, postcode or registration number. If your waste is later fly-tipped by someone you did not check, you can be fined too. Before you book:

• Check the register yourself. Ask for the registration number and look it up, rather than relying on a logo on a van or website.
• Ask where the waste goes. A proper firm will name the transfer station or recycling site it uses.
• Get a waste transfer note or receipt that describes the waste and names the carrier.
• Ask what the price covers: labour, loading time, weight or volume limits, and extra charges for fridges, mattresses, sofas or plasterboard.
• For a skip on the road, ask the firm to confirm it is applying for the council permit and whether the price includes it.
