Why quotes differ
- Volume and weight. Junk removal firms price by the share of the truck you fill; bin companies include a weight allowance and charge per tonne above it. Soil, concrete and shingles use up the allowance fast; see soil and rubble removal.
- Disposal costs. Tipping fees vary widely: in the cities we checked, from $72 a tonne for residents at Edmonton’s Waste Management Centre to $189.86 at Toronto’s depots.
- Problem items. Mattresses, fridges and other appliances with refrigerant, tyres and paint are charged separately or refused. HomeStars notes mattress disposal charges of around $25 each in bins.
- Access and labour. Stairs, condo loading docks and long carries add time.
- Permits and extras. Street permits, fuel surcharges and extra days can be added; HomeStars cites fuel surcharges of about 15% and extra-day charges of $5 to $15.
