Waste removal in Calgary: landfill rates, large item options and street use permits

Quick answer: Calgary has no curbside bulky item pickup: large items go in your black cart only if cut to under 1.25 m, otherwise to a City landfill or a free Community Cleanup event (April to September). City landfills charge $113 a tonne for basic garbage, or a flat $25 for loads under 250 kg. A bin on a City road, lane or sidewalk needs a Street Use Permit at $31.50 a day, and waste by-law fines range from $125 to $1,000.

How waste removal works in Calgary

The City of Calgary collects black, blue and green carts from houses. It does not collect sofas, mattresses or appliances beside the cart, so larger clear-outs mean a trip to one of the City’s landfills or Eco Centres, a Community Cleanup event, or a private junk removal or bin rental company.

Large items: your options

OptionWhat the City saysCost
Black cartLarge items can go in the black cart as garbage only if broken down into pieces less than 1.25 m (four feet) longPart of your waste charges
Community CleanupsRun by community associations with City trucks, 24 April to 27 September 2026. They take non-donatable furniture including mattresses and sofas, fixtures such as toilets and cabinetry, and building materials such as lumber and carpetNo fee mentioned by the City; check with the hosting association
City landfill or Eco CentreLarge furniture and mattresses are accepted and charged at the basic sanitary waste rateSee rates below
DonationCharities such as the Calgary Drop-In Centre, Women in Need Society and Goodwill Alberta take usable itemsUsually free

Community Cleanup trucks refuse electronics, tyres, metal, appliances, glass, hazardous materials, yard waste, recyclables and waste from businesses or contractors. Before you pay to dump furniture, see what you can sell, donate or reuse.

Landfill and Eco Centre rates

These are the residential rates on the City’s landfill page, which we read in September 2026:

MaterialRate
Basic sanitary waste (includes furniture and mattresses)$113 a tonne; flat $25 a load under 250 kg
Items needing refrigerant removal$17 an item plus the weight charge
Hard-to-handle loads$275 surcharge a load
Drywall and recyclable wood$90 a tonne
Scrap metal$113 a tonne
Yard waste$50 a tonne (free during seasonal free periods)
Electronics, household hazardous waste, clothing, tyres, foamFree

Cover and secure your load: the City asks for this to prevent litter, and unsecured loads are one of the areas its waste by-laws are enforced on.

Bins on the street: Street Use Permits

A bin on your own driveway is on private land. To place a garbage bin or moving container on a City road right-of-way you need a Street Use Permit, which the City lists at $31.50 a day for a site-specific permit. Apply online through the City’s permit portal at least five business days ahead for a lower-impact closure. A hoarding permit may also be needed if the closure lasts more than 24 hours or affects peak traffic, and every permit is at the discretion of the Traffic Engineer.

Illegal dumping and waste by-law fines

The City says fines for breaking its waste rules range from $125 to $1,000. The rules cover dumping, prohibited items in carts, untidy property, blocking collectors and unsecured loads going to the landfill. Report dumping by calling 311 or through the 311 app, with a photo and the exact location. Community Standards Peace Officers can also order a property owner to clean up within a set time.

Typical private prices in Calgary

For typical private prices, use the national ranges in our Canada waste removal costs guide. 1-800-GOT-JUNK?’s Canadian pricing page (updated September 2026) puts a small load (minimum to a quarter truck) at $107 to $396, a medium load at $396 to $600 and a large load at $600 to $1,099, and HomeStars’ dumpster rental guide (updated August 2026) gives $299 to $410 for a 10-yard bin and $399 to $495 for a 20-yard bin. All figures are in Canadian dollars. We did not find a published, independent Calgary-only figure we could check. The City’s $113 a tonne landfill rate is lower than Toronto’s depot rate, which may help local quotes.

Free and no obligation. Tell us what needs to go and where, and we will look for a licensed waste carrier that covers your area.

How to choose a provider in Calgary

Alberta does not run a public licence register for junk removal firms. Ask for the business’s legal name and check it holds a City of Calgary business licence where one is required, and ask for a Workers’ Compensation Board clearance letter if a crew will be working on your property. Then:

  • Ask for the price in writing and what it includes: labour, the share of the truck, disposal fees and extra charges for mattresses, fridges, tyres or electronics.
  • For a bin, ask about the weight allowance, the charge per tonne over it, how many days are included and what cannot go in (paint, propane tanks, batteries and tyres are common exclusions).
  • If the bin will sit on the street, ask who will apply for the city permit and whether the fee is in the price.
  • Ask where the waste goes and get a receipt that names the company.
  • Check the city option first. For a few bulky items, the city service described above may cost little or nothing.
