Waste removal in Birmingham: bulky waste, tip bookings and skip permits

Quick answer: Birmingham City Council charges £49.50 to collect up to 10 bulky items, but in September 2026 it had paused new bulky waste bookings because of strike action. Its household recycling centres stay open with longer hours and a booking system. A skip on the road needs a council permit at £42 a week, and only a registered skip operator can apply.

Bulky waste collection in Birmingham

Birmingham runs one flat-price bulky service rather than a sliding scale. The council’s page sets out how it works:

WhatBirmingham City Council rule
Price£49.50 per collection
How muchUp to 10 items per booking; two bin bags count as one item (so a house clearance could leave 20 bags)
ElectricalsCollected separately from other items, possibly on a different date, but paid as one collection
Current statusNew requests paused because of increased strike action by Unite; bookings made before the suspension will still be collected

Because the price covers up to 10 items, it works out cheapest when you have several things to go at once. While bookings are paused, the council points residents to donating reusable items and to its recycling centres. Our guide to council bulky waste collections covers common restrictions.

Household recycling centres (the tip)

Birmingham’s household recycling centres (HRCs) work on bookings. The council’s booking page says:

  • Book at least 2 hours before you want to attend: up to 6 days ahead for cars and up to 7 days ahead for vans.
  • You can hold up to 2 bookings at a time, on the same day or in the same week.
  • Bring proof that you live in Birmingham, such as a council tax bill. Only residents can book.
  • Vans and trailers larger than 6 feet by 4 feet need a van slot; smaller trailers can use a car slot. No commercial vehicles are allowed.
  • During the industrial action all HRCs have extended hours: 7am to 9pm on weekdays and 8am to 6pm at weekends. Car users do not need to book at Castle Bromwich while its car booking is switched off, and Kings Norton is being redeveloped, so fewer slots may be available there.

Businesses taking trade waste must book through the council’s Van Booking Centre and pay. For what counts as DIY waste and when councils can charge for it, see DIY waste at recycling centres in England.

Skip permits in Birmingham

WhatBirmingham City Council rule
Who appliesA skip operator registered with the council; residents cannot apply
Operator registrationFree, but the operator must give public liability insurance and waste carrier licence details
Permit fee£42 per week
LengthMaximum 7 days per permit; operators can apply for up to 4 weeks
NoticeApply at least 5 days before the skip goes on the road
No permitRetrospective permit charged at £238 per week; removal costs charged to the operator
Private landNo permit needed for a skip on a private driveway

The council publishes a list of registered skip operators. If a firm is not on it, it cannot legally get a permit for a road skip in Birmingham. See skip permits and the public highway.

Fly-tipping fines

With bulky collections paused, the risk of rubbish going to the wrong person is higher. In England, councils can issue a fixed penalty of up to £1,000 for fly-tipping and up to £600 to a householder who fails in their duty of care, for example by paying an unregistered collector whose load is later dumped (GOV.UK). See fly-tipping and the law.

Private waste removal costs in Birmingham

For typical private prices, use the national ranges in our UK waste removal costs guide. Checkatrade’s June 2026 skip guide puts a 2 to 3 yard mini skip at £75 to £175 a week, a 4 to 5 yard midi at £130 to £320 and a 6 to 8 yard builder’s skip at £190 to £450, and its rubbish removal guide gives £64 to £94 an hour for a man and van. We have not found a reliable Birmingham-only price survey, so treat these as national guides. The council’s own fee is a useful benchmark when you compare quotes for a few bulky items.

Request a waste removal quote

Free and no obligation. Tell us what needs to go and where, and we will look for a licensed waste carrier that covers your area.

We are a comparison and referral service, not a waste removal company. We do not guarantee a quote, a price or a response time. In the UK, always check the carrier's waste carrier registration before handing over waste.

How to choose a waste carrier

Anyone you pay to take your rubbish away must be registered to carry waste. In England that is the Environment Agency register, which GOV.UK lets you search by name, postcode or registration number. If your waste is later fly-tipped by someone you did not check, you can be fined too. Before you book:

  • Check the register yourself. Ask for the registration number and look it up, rather than relying on a logo on a van or website.
  • Ask where the waste goes. A proper firm will name the transfer station or recycling site it uses.
  • Get a waste transfer note or receipt that describes the waste and names the carrier.
  • Ask what the price covers: labour, loading time, weight or volume limits, and extra charges for fridges, mattresses, sofas or plasterboard.
  • For a skip on the road, ask the firm to confirm it is applying for the council permit and whether the price includes it.
