Waste removal in Manchester: bulky waste, van permits and skip permits

Quick answer: Manchester City Council gives each household one free collection of up to three large items a year, then charges £32 for up to three items or £64 for up to six. Tips across Greater Manchester are free for residents, but a van or pick-up needs a free permit. A skip on the road needs a council permit at £44, valid for up to 7 days.

Large item collection in Manchester

The council collects large household items from your home address only, and the rules on where you leave them are strict.

Crews only take the items you listed, and cupboards and fridges must be empty. Recycling centres and van permits

Manchester’s tips are part of the Recycle for Greater Manchester network, which serves all nine councils in the city region (Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford). They are for residents’ household waste only, with no trade waste.

A permit is needed for any van, car-derived van, campervan or pick-up, and for any vehicle towing a twin-axle trailer, including hired vans.
No permit is needed for a car or a 4×4 that is not a pick-up, or for a car towing a single-axle trailer.
Apply at least 2 working days before your first visit. The permit is linked to your vehicle, so there is nothing to show on arrival.
No vans over 5.3 metres long or 3.5 tonnes are allowed at any centre.
The van permit system has been updated: existing holders were emailed and must update their account by 14 October or it will be deleted.

Manchester’s own page carries the message “Your waste, your responsibility” and links to finding a registered rubbish collector. How to choose a waste carrier

Anyone you pay to take your rubbish away must be registered to carry waste. In England that is the Environment Agency register, which GOV.UK lets you search by name, postcode or registration number. If your waste is later fly-tipped by someone you did not check, you can be fined too. Before you book:

Check the register yourself. Ask for the registration number and look it up, rather than relying on a logo on a van or website.
Ask where the waste goes. A proper firm will name the transfer station or recycling site it uses.
Get a waste transfer note or receipt that describes the waste and names the carrier.
Ask what the price covers: labour, loading time, weight or volume limits, and extra charges for fridges, mattresses, sofas or plasterboard.
For a skip on the road, ask the firm to confirm it is applying for the council permit and whether the price includes it.
