Waste removal in Glasgow: bulk uplift charges, recycling centres and skip permits

Quick answer: Glasgow City Council charges £5 per item for a bulk uplift, £25 per white good and £80 for special items such as sheds or cast-iron baths, and its household waste recycling centres are free for residents. A skip on the road needs a council permit: £55 for the first week outside the city centre and £92 inside it.

Bulk uplift charges in Glasgow

Glasgow has charged for bulky waste since a Full Council decision in February 2020. From 1 April 2026 white goods and upholstered seating have their own categories.

There is no upper limit on items, but everything must be listed on the request.
Collection can be up to 28 days after you request it. Put items out only the day before, inside your property boundary (a back court or garden). Items left on the street or in a back lane are treated as fly-tipping.
The council cannot take requests from high-rise flats or buildings with internal bulk chambers; residents there use their bulk room or contact their housing association or factor.
Not collected: asbestos, plasterboard, fire extinguishers, cast-iron washing poles, garden rollers, metal garage doors and supermarket trolleys.
If you cannot go online, a phone line runs on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9am to 3pm.

Household waste recycling centres

Glasgow’s four public centres are Dawsholm, Easter Queenslie, Polmadie and Shieldhall. They are free for Glasgow residents and open every day from 8am to 6pm (last entry 5.45pm). Suspected traders may be refused.

Cars over 1.8 metres and vans are not generally allowed. Residents’ vans are accepted only at Shieldhall and Dawsholm, from 8am to 11.30am and 1.30pm to 4.45pm, and must report to the weighbridge first. Polmadie refuses vans.
Easter Queenslie is being rebuilt; the temporary site closed from 20 April 2026, with reopening expected in late summer or early autumn 2026.
Upholstered seating goes in its own container at Dawsholm, Shieldhall and Polmadie.
Commercial waste is not accepted and must go through the weighbridge, where it is charged.

Skip permits in Glasgow

Under the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984, a skip on a road, footway or cycle path needs the council’s permission. The fees below are from Glasgow’s 2026/27 Book of Charges.

The city centre is the area bounded by the M8, the River Clyde and the east kerb line of Saltmarket, High Street and Castle Street. A skip permit covers a builder’s skip up to 1.8m wide and 3.7m long; anything bigger needs a road occupation permit. Glasgow asks for a minimum of 28 working days to process an application, which is far longer than English cities, so book a road skip early. Fees are non-refundable.
