Quick answer: City of Adelaide households get two free hard waste collections a year, each up to 2 cubic metres, booked through Cleanaway, and extra collections cost $81. A skip bin on a City of Adelaide road or footpath needs a City Works Permit at $1.85 per square metre per day, with a $32 minimum, applied for five business days ahead. Putting items out without a booking can be treated as illegal dumping, with expiation fees of up to $1,000. South Australia’s metropolitan waste levy is $171 a tonne in 2026-27.
How waste removal works in Adelaide
Metropolitan Adelaide is split between more than a dozen councils, and most offer booked hard waste collections with their own limits. This guide uses the City of Adelaide, which covers the city centre and North Adelaide. If you live in a suburb, check your council’s hard waste service and permit rules.
Hard waste collection
We read the City of Adelaide’s hard waste page in September 2026. The key rules:
| Rule | What the City says |
|---|---|
| Allowance (sites of 6 or fewer dwellings) | Two free collections per household per calendar year; extra collections $81 including GST |
| Allowance (sites of 7 or more dwellings) | Up to 12 collections per site per year, ideally coordinated by the body corporate; extras $81 per 2 m³ |
| Size limits | Up to 2 cubic metres per household (a 6 by 4 trailer load); no item longer than 1.5 m or heavier than 50 kg |
| Timing | Out no earlier than 24 hours before and by 7am on the day; waiting time up to two weeks |
| Booking | Online, or through Cleanaway on 1800 777 844; change or cancel at least three days ahead |
| Your responsibility | Keeping the pile safe until collection, and removing anything left behind promptly |
The City lists these as possible illegal dumping, with expiation fees of up to $1,000: putting items out without a booking, outside another property or in a public place, more than 24 hours early, or leaving uncollected items on the verge. Residents can also use the City’s four Reuse and Recycle Hubs for hard-to-recycle items. See our guide to mattress disposal.
Skip bins: City Works Permits
Any works on City of Adelaide roads, footpaths or parklands need a City Works Permit, and the fee calculator lists skip bins as a city works activity. City Works Guide #6 covers ladders, industrial bins and shipping containers.
| Rule | What the City says |
|---|---|
| Fee | $1.85 per square metre per day; minimum $32 per application; capped at $430 per application per day |
| Notice | At least five business days before the start date |
| Insurance | Public liability cover of at least $20 million, noting the City as an interested party |
| Plan | A traffic management plan or site plan showing the bin’s position and pedestrian protection |
| Other fees | A Local Nuisance Exemption application, where needed, costs $250 |
As a rough guide, a skip taking up 8 square metres for 3 days would cost about $44 at the published rate. A skip on private land needs no permit. See our guide to hiring a skip.
Hazardous waste and EPA tracking
In South Australia, high-risk wastes listed in Schedule 1 of the Environment Protection Act 1993 must be tracked when they are moved. The EPA requires a consignment authorisation for the waste movement and a transport certificate that travels with each load, and waste transport businesses may need an EPA licence. Ask any removalist taking asbestos or chemicals for its EPA licence and a copy of the transport certificate.
Illegal dumping penalties in SA
The SA EPA says penalties for illegal dumping can reach $500,000 or 4 years’ imprisonment for individuals and $2 million for companies, and waste producers or transporters who dispose of waste illegally can be fined up to $120,000 under the Waste to Resources Policy. At street level, the City of Adelaide’s expiation fees for dumping are up to $1,000.
Typical private prices in Adelaide
For typical private prices, use the national ranges in our Australia waste removal costs guide. All figures are in Australian dollars. We did not find a published, independent Adelaide-only price list we could check, so treat the national ranges as a guide. The SA metropolitan levy of $171 a tonne is part of every Adelaide tip fee. Weight matters as much as size, because tip fees include the state landfill levy; soil, bricks and tiles fill a bin’s weight limit long before its volume. See soil and rubble removal.

How to choose a provider in Adelaide
State licensing for waste transport is aimed mainly at hazardous waste, so for ordinary household rubbish the checks that matter are about where your waste ends up. For tracked waste, the EPA requires a consignment authorisation and a transport certificate with each load. Before you book:
- Get the price in writing, including GST, the hire period, the weight limit and the charge per tonne over it, and surcharges for mattresses, tyres or heavy waste.
- Ask where the waste goes and for a tip or recycling receipt. A price far below the rest is a warning sign.
- For a bin on the road, ask who applies for the council permit and whether the fee is included.
- Tell them about any hazardous material before they quote. Suspected asbestos is a job for a licensed removalist; see our guide to suspected asbestos.
