Council services and fees in five cities

We read each city council’s pages in September 2026. Each covers only its own municipality; suburbs in other council areas have different rules.

Why quotes differ

  • Weight and waste type. Every tonne sent to landfill carries the state levy, from $90 in WA to $180.20 in Sydney, so heavy waste such as soil, bricks and tiles costs more. See soil and rubble removal.
  • Location. Affordable Skippy Bins adds $20 to $50 for outer Brisbane areas, and city-centre permits add daily fees.
  • Access and labour. Goodbye Junk may charge extra for difficult access such as stairs without a lift or long carries.
  • Problem items. Mattresses, tyres, gas bottles, chemicals and engineered stone are refused or surcharged. Asbestos needs a licensed removalist; see suspected asbestos.
  • Hire period. Most prices include a standard hire period; extra days cost more.

For hazardous waste, each state licenses transporters: an environment protection licence in NSW, an EPA permit or registration in Victoria, an ERA 57 environmental authority in Queensland, a controlled waste carrier licence in WA and EPA tracking in SA. Our checklist on comparing waste removal quotes covers what to ask.
